Operations on rails

The Lännen Wheel Loader Backhoe makes an excellent basic unit for operations involving the maintenance of railway tracks. The road-rail outfit is based on rail wheels with rapid attachment and the supplementary safety equipment specifically approved for use on railways.

Tasks to be accomplished on the rails include, for example: various cable-laying operations, installation of signals and safety devices, replacement of sleepers, compaction of macadam, maintenance and construction of level-crossings as well as other earth-moving works and clearing of brushwood.

The Lännen machine provides major benefits for working under such conditions, such as; place for a safety attendant in the cabin, no tail overhang which would obstruct working on double rails, virtually unobstructed movements of the backhoe even when working on an electrified track.

Off-road properties

A machine with large-sized wheels climbs easily even on high profile rails and, as necessary, the work can be resumed at virtually any point along the track.

The hydrostatic transmission equipped with electronic drive automation enables driving with incredible precision.

The large-sized wheels with great traction force also keep the machine firmly in position, whenever necessary. The tyre also wears less.

Rail-wheel unit

The rail-wheel unit with rapid attachment enables the machine to be converted from a road-rail excavator to a standard machine within minutes.

The large-sized rail wheels keep the front end of the machine firmly on the track.

The ample ground clearance under the rail-wheel unit makes climbing onto and from the rail easier and does not notably impede normal operations.

The extensive bearing distance between the front and rear rail-wheel units and the lockable articulated joint ensure that the machine stays firmly and safely on the track during travelling and working.

Driver's cabin

The excellent visibility of the work object and the cabin surroundings also creates a safe working atmosphere for people assisting.

The safety attendant or an assisting person can travel sitting comfortably on the folding seat in the cabin. This is essential when travelling over large distances.

Even the most sophisticated pieces of optional equipment are easy to operate using Lännen's excellent control system.

Backhoe

The attachment point of the boom lies notably lower than on any 360º excavator. This is a remarkable advantage while working under live power lines. Usually, the operating movements need not be limited by much.

The advantage of this becomes even more evident when work attachments are being used in combination with rototilts requiring plenty of overhead space.

The work cycle is far shorter than that of any 360º excavator, because only the backhoe is turned, not the entire machine.

Front loader

The work implements, to be hitched to the front loader, greatly increase the applicability of the machine.

The railway yards and level crossings may be cleaned using brushing units in summer and a plough or a bucket in winter.

The great lifting power is made best use of when transferring heavy sleeper bundles or gravel loads.

On electrified tracks

Working on electrified tracks sets additional requirements on fitting out the machine; the lifting height of both the backhoe and the loader needs to be restricted. Earth conductors are used for improving conductibility over the joints and, finally, through the rail wheels to the rail.

For working on double track, the swing angle of the backhoe needs to be restricted separately on both sides.

The devices restricting the lifting height and the swinging angle can also be applied to access platforms.
